Salomé's Journey Podcast

In 2018, I was struggling to find a job, and it was taking a toll on my mental health, so I turned to blogging as I've been doing for years, but I couldn't fully commit. I was a single mother with two young children, desperate for a job. And I thought starting a blog to share my journey would be therapeutic, but I was too stressed to write, no matter how hard I tried.

One day, I came across a video about podcasts. At the time, I had never heard of podcasting, and it piqued my interest. I tried YouTube a year earlier, but gave up after a couple of months. I wasn't comfortable talking to a camera. Additionally, between school runs, homework, and other responsibilities, I barely had time to create content. I don't remember the YouTuber's name, as it's been years, but I'm grateful to them for inspiring me to start a podcast.

I was too stressed and anxious about my situation at the time to maintain a blog. I also couldn't commit to YouTube, as a mum with two young children, without any support, I barely had any time for content making and editing. Podcasting wasn't as big as it is today, and didn't require a lot of equipment. It was exactly what I needed to share my thoughts and document my journey.

My First Podcast: Tascam And A Dark Room

Salomé's Journey isn't my first podcast, as I mentioned above, I first got into podcasting in 2018 to share my journey as an unemployed single mum. Life wasn't easy for me at the time, and there were a lot of things I wanted to get out of my system. Things I wasn't comfortable saying on camera but couldn't put in writing due to stress. I can be honest on a podcast and share my experience without worry.

As an introvert and a shy person, I loved the idea of having a podcast. People would listen to my stories from around the world, without ever running into them in real life. I started researching the best tools to use for a podcast, since I had no experience. I settled for a Tascam, which I still had until last summer and gave it away before moving to London.

It was easy to come up with a name for the podcast since it was a personal journal. I watched a few editing tutorials, especially on Audacity, then started practising storytelling. I gave up on reading a script because it didn't sound natural, andI became a spontaneous podcaster, which I still am. I don't write scripts for my podcast and YouTube channel. You would know if I did, I sound like a robot when reading a script!

Salomé's Journey: Podcast And YouTube Channel

I used to record episodes for my podcast in my pyjamas late at night after putting the kids to bed. There was no need to do my hair, makeup, and dress up for the podcast; I just sat in bed and started speaking into the mic or Tascam. My listeners probably didn't know how intimate that moment felt for me, and sometimes, I smile to myself thinking of those days. I had my first podcast for a few months before moving on to pursue other interests.

I never gave up on the idea of starting a new podcast, even after I started creating content on YouTube. I've had a few channels over the years, and it was an amazing experience, but something was missing, which is the reason I started over in October this year. I started Salomé's Journey on YouTube to share my journey as a single woman in her 40s living alone in London. My previous channels were pretty niche, and I felt limited in what I could create.

So I deleted my previous channel and created Salomé's Journey, a lifestyle channel that focuses on my aspirations, life and travel stories, vlogs, and honest conversations about life in general. A few weeks after starting my YouTube channel, I launched a blog for those who prefer to read as an extension of my channel. And a couple of days ago, my podcast, Salomé's Journey, went live on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. I love writing and creating content on YouTube, but I truly miss podcasting, and now is the time to get back into it.
